5 stars I think Axel may well be my favorite of the Sovrano brothers. Maybe that’s because he wasn’t raised with them and seems gentler somehow. Don’t get me wrong—he’s still an alphahole, which I find annoying because they’re so extreme in their jealousy and need for control. And he’s still damaged. But there’s this underlying sweetness about him that I was able to see from the beginning, and I can’t say that’s true for Michael or Christian. As a result, his transformation isn’t as dramatic as theirs, but just like with the others, it’s tough not to love him by the end, after witnessing the tearing down of the walls he’s built around his heart. Theresa, who isn’t actually a Sovrano but is treated like one because of her relationship with Xander, is heartbroken because Xander has died and she always believed she would marry him. Apparently, he didn’t share that belief but considered her a friend. She laments the fact that she never told him how she felt (as if that would have made a difference) and decides that she has a second chance with Axel, Xander’s triplet. Axel is not at all like Xander, at least, on the surface, and is quick to point out that he is NOT Xander and will not be a substitute. Somewhere along the line, he recognizes that he and Theresa have something she never had with Xander and he decides it’s something worth pursuing. Naturally, he goes through the usual second-guessing and sends Theresa away because he thinks she deserves someone better. It’s a formula, after all, but at least, Theresa acknowledges it when she alludes to Michael and Christian’s relationships and fantasizes that Axel will come back to her. Of course, he will. That’s not a spoiler, either. It’s just a question of how long it’s going to take and how much pain the characters will go through before he pulls his head out of his butt. As I have said with all other books in this series, I edited this and I like to think I helped it to become better along the way. By the end, I really enjoyed it. February 14, 2022
